Privacy

What we keep, and why.

Short version: a score, a name you chose, and nothing that follows you around the internet.

No advertsNo ad networks and no tracking pixels.
No cookiesThe game remembers you with a random code stored in your own browser.
No email neededPlay under any name. Nothing to sign up for.

What the game stores

When you finish a flight we save the flight: the name you typed, the bird, the miles, the score, the time, and a random code that identifies your browser so your own flights can be added up. The code is made on your device. It is not linked to your name, your email or your address, and we do not record your IP address against it.

Your browser also keeps a few things for you: your best scores, which field notes you have unlocked, and whether the sound is on. Clearing your browser data removes them.

Wingbeat Daily

The daily bird games save the same kind of thing: the name you chose, which birds you guessed, how many guesses it took and how long. That is what your streak, your life list and the day’s table are built from. The recordings in the by-ear game are played straight from xeno-canto.org, so when you press play your browser also talks to xeno-canto.

If you connect a BirdForum account

BirdForum tells us three things about you, and only when you open Wingbeat from the forum or press Connect: your forum user number, your username and the address of your avatar. We use them to show your forum name and picture on the leaderboard and to put you in the members’ league. We never see your password, your email or your messages.

Press Disconnect on the start screen at any time and that browser goes back to being anonymous. Your earlier flights stay on the board under your forum name unless you ask us to remove them.

Who can see it

The leaderboard is public: the name, the bird, the score and, for forum members, the avatar. Nothing else is shown to anyone. Sponsors see totals only, never individual players.

Where it is kept

Apart from those recordings, your browser talks to two places only: this site, and our database, which is hosted by Supabase. The fonts and everything else on the page come from this site, so nobody else learns that you were here.

Children

Wingbeat is suitable for children and asks for no personal details. If you are under 13, please pick a nickname that is not your real name.

Seeing or deleting your data

Email will@redefined.co.uk with the name on the leaderboard and we will send you what we hold or delete it, whichever you ask for, within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Who we are

Wingbeat is run by Redefined Media Ltd, the company behind BirdForum. When the charity that will hold the land is registered, it will take over the game and this page will say so.
